What are you reading?
I know I ask you all the time, especially JuJu and T, "What are you reading?" I don't do it to be a super pest, I actually have a reason for my constant barage of questions.
WARNING!!! DAD IS ABOUT TO HAVE A FLASHBACK!!!
As a kid, I loved the Bill Gaither Trio Kids album, yes this is what was called a "cassette." This particular song, "input/output" always stuck with me. The bottom line is that what you put into your mind you get out. The Bible has a few verse that address this as well.
Matthew 12:33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
So, this is one of those things that I have a lot of personal experience in. I know, for example that when I watch violent programs with a lot of swearing in them I tend to want to swear and I think about doing violent things, (but I never would because I am a lover, not a fighter). I have to be careful I don't watch too much politics, it tends to make me cranky. Just as alcohol will make me do dumb things so too bad ideas, pictures, videos and stories will fill my mind with things that don't please God.
The way to fight this is to fill my mind with things that please God. So I have to be choosey with the music I hear, the stories I read, the podcasts I listen to and the movies I watch. I also need to watch how long I expose myself to distractions that can take my mind of God, you know, like "Harry Potter Puzzles" and "Angry Bird" or "Minecraft", or even reading fantasy stories that take you out of reality.
The point is not to regulate everything you do, I think you all are mature enough to make decisions on SOME of this. Mom and I will still monitor for accountability and to make sure you don't lose yourself, sometimes you cannot see how something is affecting you. Think about what you put into your mind and ask yourself, "Is the content/time I am spending on this pleasing to God? Or do I have Math Homework and Bible reading to do?" You can also insert "Or do I have to kick Daddu's butt in James Bond or Throw Throw Burrito."
